COMMUNITY KITCHEN

Wesley was fortunate to have received considerable funding to support the remodeling of the Community Kitchen. The licensing by the Arizona Department of Health Services as a commercial kitchen permits us to serve fresh, healthy, nutritious food to the children and the community we serve.

This commercial licensing allows Wesley to cook and feed the children and youth in the afterschool and summer programs healthy and nutritious meals prepared in-house and combined with fresh vegetables grown right in our community garden.

The kitchen is a safe space where everyone can learn basic cooking skills and immerse themselves in the culinary world, a place full of color, taste, creativity, and possibilities. Kids who are part of our After School and Summer Programs get to learn how to cook and learn about kitchen safety. We open them up to a safe space where they can explore, feel free, be creative, and even make a mess. Food has the power of nutrition, but it also brings a community together.

Partnerships are a vital part of the community, which is why we partnered with Upward and Onward, a transitional program at The Academies at South Mountain High School, a program created to prepare students for a lifetime of success and independence in their homes, navigating the community and jobs. This partnership is part of an equal opportunity standpoint where the interns have their second location of Upward and Onward Café, a small Café for our employees where they learn vital skills for a job, as well as social skills and kitchen skills. These Kitchen skills are helpful in their day-to-day lives in addition to a career opportunity. They learn how to cut, and wash produce, different cooking methods, where to store perishables and nonperishable food, how to work in a fast-paced environment, and much more. While learning these traits, they also are introduced to life responsibilities, a work environment, healthy food, and life choices!

Wesley’s Commercial Kitchen is much more than just food!

We are eager to help the community by providing a space for food entrepreneurs who need a commercial kitchen. The kitchen includes 6 gas stove tops, a griddle, 3 compartment sink, and a variety of appliances. Please contact us for availability and pricing at (602) 517-5554 or lsisterna@wesleychc.org

Find out more about healthy choices on our nutrition page and sign up for their free classes to learn how to make better food choices!
